The Riverhead TrailNav Challenge, held in the forest at Riverhead, is more a navigation problem solved with running shoes than a straightforward race. A fixture in the Lactic Turkey series for over two decades, it retains an old-school adventure-race atmosphere. Participants navigate with a map, teammates debate route options amicably, and there is no single correct path. This event is defined as a "navigation-based event combining running, walking, and strategy."
Teams receive the map at the start and then chart a course through checkpoints, aiming to "score as many points as possible within a set time limit" before returning. Some checkpoints include surprise challenges for bonus points, adding an element beyond just physical exertion and compass skills. The event accommodates families, schools, adventurers, and highly competitive teams, all sharing the same muddy, outdoor experience. A prize ceremony and barbecue follow, concluding the "friendly, fun day out in nature."
