The Hauraki Rail Trail defines the Trail Trilogy: a largely flat route on well-maintained paths, gravel, and compacted trail, all connected to the region’s historic railway line. It is a multi-distance off-road running and walking event, with participants moving through farmland, native bush, and small-town charm before converging at the historic Waihi Train Station.
Expect straightforward rail-trail running, not technical mountain terrain: consistent surfaces, open sections, and the steady pace characteristic of following an old railway corridor. Some participants aim to run fast, others walk or join with family and friends. A notable feature is the opportunity to “race the train” on a segment of the trail before the shared finish festival at the station.
