UltraMan New Zealand is an application-only ultra-endurance triathlon based around Wanaka. It follows the international UltraMan format: three days of racing, with a 10km open-water swim, 421km of total cycling, and an 84km run. This is not a mass-entry triathlon; athletes are selected after the organising team reviews their ultra-distance background, qualifying results, and readiness for the event.
The race starts with the swim and a 145km bike leg on day one, continues with a 276km bike leg on day two, and finishes with a double-marathon run on day three. It is aimed at experienced iron-distance and ultra-distance triathletes rather than people stepping up from standard triathlon. Previous UltraMan finishes, results in long-distance triathlons, and other ultra-endurance experience can count in an application. Support crews matter throughout the event, because athletes face long days, fatigue that builds across the weekend, and strict protocols in line with other UltraMan races overseas.
