The Marathon Filhos da Freita is a mountain race series held in Arouca, within Portugal’s Aveiro District, typically scheduled for mid-April. The event lineup includes a 10 km walk, a 21 km trail race, and 42 km options, with the 42 km trail race being the most attended. This event takes place on natural terrain within the Arouca Geopark, distinct from a road marathon.
The longer trail route involves an ascent of approximately 1,200 metres, and the 21 km trail race gains about 700 metres, requiring endurance on uneven, sloping terrain. The series also offers an opportunity for a combined race and sightseeing trip: the São João de Tarouca monastery is reachable within an hour, and the Passadiços do Paiva, a boardwalk along the Paiva River, is also in close proximity.
