Coyote Kids Week 2 is part of Kokomo's free six-week children's running program held at Jackson Morrow Park. Club Kokomo Roadrunners organizes the event with community backing. The program is designed for all ability levels, including very young children who may need assistance walking. New participants can register on Thursday evenings, and children can join at any point during the series. The shortest races, 25 and 50 yards, are run first, followed by 200 yards, a quarter mile, a half mile, and two one-mile races divided by age group.
The program has been a Kokomo fixture for approximately 20 years, initiated after local runners Ray and Robin Tetrault observed a similar event in Illinois. Hundreds of children participate at Jackson Morrow Park annually, fostering an atmosphere more akin to a family gathering than a competitive meet. Each child receives a ribbon and a popsicle post-race. Those completing all six weeks are awarded a trophy, and the Kokomo Batman occasionally runs in costume with the participants. Awards Night features complimentary pizza and beverages for families, aligning with the program's straightforward approach: short races, numerous participants, and sufficient small traditions to encourage repeat attendance.
