Last Wolf Howling is a zoo-start race day at Stone Zoo in Stoneham, Massachusetts, built around a chip-timed half marathon and a shorter 6K road-and-trail option. Entry includes zoo admission, so runners can treat the race as more than a start-line-and-parking-lot outing. Half marathoners get a finisher medal, participants receive a winter cap, and the finish area turns into a party with DJ Phoenix, beer from Mighty Squirrel or Lagunitas for runners over 21, plus food such as chicken pot pies and pizza.
The half marathon starts and finishes at the zoo, then uses rolling roads around Middlesex Fells Reservation, including laps of the Spot Pond loop and the hillier Ravine Road loop. The 6K shares the same start and finish miles but adds a mile on trails inside the reservation. The course has seven aid stations, GU at two points, toilets near the start and at Flynn Rink, and a mix of road closures and lane closures. Teams are encouraged, with perks for captains who recruit enough runners and prizes for the largest teams, while more than 60 volunteers handle work such as registration, bib pickup, setup, swag, and cleanup.
