More than 1,000 runners and walkers participate in Popcorn Panic, an annual September morning race in Valparaiso, Indiana, connected to the city’s Popcorn Festival. Participants can select a timed 5K or a 5-mile race, registering as individuals or teams. The 5-mile race begins just before the 5K, and families may use strollers, but pets are not permitted on the course.
The course begins at 63 Lafayette Street and proceeds through Valparaiso’s tree-lined streets. This Valpo tradition, over four decades old, typically draws more than 1,400 runners. Team scoring is based on the top four finishers' overall places, and team members are still eligible for individual awards. The male and female winners of the 5-mile race receive a champion crown, a parade ride, festival drink tickets, and a gift card from Extra Mile Fitness Company.
