Nürnberg's cycling scene radiates outward from the city into the Franconia region—the 30. Herpersdorf-Cup (165km) and Gravelride routes into the Steigerwald exploit rolling limestone terrain and forest roads rising 300–400m above the Pegnitz valley. Within the city limits, runners find the Nürnberger Stadtlauf circuit and flat parkrun courses along the Pegnitz river, but the real terrain action starts 20km south and east where the gently undulating Franconian landscape begins—gravel and tarmac routes climb through wine villages and past the carp ponds that define the region.
