Bilbao sits in a steep, green valley in the Basque Country where running and cycling demand hill fitness—expect constant climbs through the city's hilly terrain and surrounding forests. The Orbea Gran Fondo Vitoria-Gasteiz is a major regional cycling event (144km, rolling to mountainous), and local riders use the winding routes east toward Durango and the Gorbeia massif for serious elevation gain. Runners have access to the tight Green Series races through Barakaldo and Ollargan, plus the demanding Durangoko Mendi Duatloia, which mixes trail and road in the nearby mountains; flat running here is rare, and most training happens along the Nervión riverbank or into the forested hills surrounding the city.
