Leeds running is flat through the city centre — the canal towpaths and Roundhay Park loop dominate local training — but climbs start immediately west into the Pennines, where the Struggle cycling race tackles steep gradients around Hebden Bridge. Cyclists based here have serious terrain within 30km: the White Rose Classic and Calder Clarion routes push into the upland valleys with sustained 4–6% grades and moorland descents. Trail runners and fell runners head the same direction for gritstone ridges above 400m elevation.
