Manchester's running scene is canal-flat — the Heaton Park 5K and towpath routes dominate the city, but serious runners head south towards the Peak District within 30km for proper elevation. Cyclists have the Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride as the iconic long route, while the Cheshire courses south of the city (Congleton CC and Oulton Park clubs host regular 16km time trials and the Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon) offer rolling terrain and a competitive scene that draws riders from across the North West. Winter weather is wet and grey; most training happens on canals, parks, and the industrial towpath network.
