Leicester running is built on flat terrain and canal towpaths—the Grand Union Canal and River Soar offer traffic-free routes through the city, with the local parkrun scene strong around Victoria Park and Bradgate Park just north of the urban area. Cyclists favour the same canal paths for commuting but head into Charnwood Forest (15–20km north, ~300m elevation gain) for serious climbing; the sandstone ridge around Bardon Hill and Woodhouse Eaves gives fast descents and technical singletrack. The city centre itself is pancake-flat, so road racers and longer-distance runners typically build weekly mileage on the out-and-back canal stretches before venturing into the uplands.
