Central Europe's largest active mining site opens its normally restricted Erzberg terrain once a year for the Erzberg Run & Walk in Styria, Austria. The main run begins in the morning, followed by the Nordic Walk. The event covers about 13 kilometers with 600 meters of elevation gain. Since 2003, it has attracted over 1,500 athletes from 19 nations, with thousands of spectators present on the mountain.
The course ascends the Styrian Erzberg, an iron mountain known as the Styrian Pyramid, with an average gradient of roughly 6%. It crosses areas normally off-limits, including rock steps created by miners, the Zentrum am Berg tunnel research center, a complete crossing of the pyramid-shaped mine, and the usually inaccessible summit plateau. Competitive racers, recreational runners, and walkers share the mountain, and the panorama from the summit extends over the Eisenerz Alps.
