Pine Creek does most of the talking here, with the course following the Pine Creek Rail Trail through the upper “Canyon” section of Pine Creek Gorge, the “Grand Canyon of the East.” The 2024 Run Rail Trail presents a straightforward runner’s challenge: crushed stone underfoot, no motor traffic, and a large natural corridor listed as a “National Natural Landmark.”
The trail is wide, fine crushed stone and notably clean underfoot, with a barely perceptible southbound grade that you may notice more by pace than by eye. Longer runners make repeated passes between Asaph and Blackwell, while shorter routes turn earlier toward places like Tiaghdaton, so the field mixes first-timers with serious ultra people. Expect cyclists, walkers, possibly horse-drawn wagons, and plenty of wildlife; when the leaves start changing, the canyon can “put on a show that draws people from all over the Northeast.”
