Lardner Park gives Wild Dog Backyard Ultra its bite: a backyard ultra that loops the picturesque grounds rather than hiding the work. It has the reputation of being “One of the toughest backyard ultras in Australia,” and the reason is plain enough once you hear about the farm tracks, open views, and almost 140m of vert every lap.
This is built for ultra runners who understand that the hard part is getting back out again. Each lap starts in the “historic wooden corral,” with campfires burning and people cheering, which sounds cosy until you remember you have to keep leaving it. The farm tracks and scenic views help for a while, but the climb keeps collecting its toll, lap after lap, all the way back to that corral.
