The Valley Vertikiller Trail Race offers three distances on Sumas Mountain in Abbotsford, British Columbia: 10 km, 20 km, and 30 km loop courses. All start from Taggart Road in October. Most of the running is on technical single-track, requiring trail skills and fitness even for the shortest option. The 30 km route is the most challenging, with nearly 1,500 m of climbing and a push to the peak of Sumas Mountain. The 20 km course retains much of the mountain's character with nearly 1,000 m of gain. The 10 km “Cuddler” still climbs 400 m and stays mostly on flowy forest trail.
The longer courses go past Chadsey Lake, climb toward or to the Sumas Mountain summit, and use the Eastern Lookout as an aid station. The 30 km includes raging creeks, several viewpoints, and a technical descent after the main climb. Teams of five or more can enter the 30 km Team Challenge, where the fastest five times determine the team result; the winning team receives cash and a trophy spot. All distances feature stocked aid stations, catered finish-line food, custom racer swag, draw prizes, podium and cash awards for the top three, and rewards for new course records. FatDog 120 Race Management organizes the event, with proceeds supporting Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue.
