The Midnight New Year's Eve Run through the Metropolis is a five-kilometer New Year's Eve run in Prague 5, starting near Galerie Butovice just before midnight. Its unusual timing is intentional: it is presented as the last race in Europe, and possibly the world, in one calendar year and the first race of the next. The fastest runners finish a few minutes after midnight, so the same race carries participants across the year line. The route uses the Inline park behind Galerie Nové Butovice. Recreational runners and competitive racers line up together, with the more serious runners pushing hard through the winter night while others treat it as part race, part New Year celebration. Friends and spectators are encouraged to cheer along the course and act as support crew, with champagne substituting for the usual water-bottle duty.
