BÄRglauf is Grafenau’s town-center run, utilizing a short 1.03-kilometer loop through the old town. Held in October, races throughout the day cater to children, school-age runners, hobby runners, competitive adults, and individuals with disabilities. The name originates from the bear on Grafenau’s coat of arms, making the local mascot an integral part of the event, not merely a poster logo.
The loop winds past historic buildings, the Stadtplatz, the Kurpark, and the Stadtberg. Its length belies its difficulty, as approximately half the course ascends. The program features a main run, Bambini and school races, a hobby run, and an Inklusionslauf on a separate afternoon route. The Werbegemeinschaft, Grafenau’s business association, organizes the race, fostering a strong local atmosphere: Marien-Apotheke staffs a booth during the run, distributing magnesium drinks, glucose tablets, and small surprise goodie bags.
