Brockenheroes begins in Schierke, Saxony-Anhalt, leading participants uphill to the Brocken, the 1,141-metre summit that stands as the highest mountain in northern Germany. This event is a time trial for runners, walkers, road cyclists, mountain bikers, and e-bike riders, where each competitor races against the clock rather than in a mass start. Pro Sport im Harz e.V. is the organizing body, typically commencing the schedule at 9:00 AM, with staggered starts every 30 seconds for runners, walkers, and cyclists. The event features 5 km and 10 km runs, trail and cross-country running, Nordic walking, regular walking, road cycling, mountain biking, e-bike categories, and team races.
The course commences at Schierke's lowest elevation, ascending towards the Brocken plateau, accumulating approximately 500 metres of elevation gain, with the finish line situated on the mountain for all categories. The Brocken is also known as Blocksberg, and its exposed, windswept summit has drawn comparisons to Mont Ventoux. The event primarily targets hobby, leisure, and amateur athletes, though licensed riders and professional athletes can register, sometimes competing outside the general classification. The organizers embrace the challenge, describing the race as a form of "well-kept torture," and in severe weather, participants have earned the moniker Sturmbrockenheroes.
