Harzlauf Thale begins and ends in Kurpark Thale, situated above the Kaffeeloch and on the meadow near Sankt-Petri-Kirche at the entrance to the Bodetal. This is a cross-country trail race in the Harz mountains, featuring autumn forest running and sufficient climbing to make even the shorter adult route feel like mountain running. The primary distances offered are 5.7 km, 11.3 km, and 22.6 km, alongside a 1.3 km children's run named Rund um die Hexenpfütze.
The 5.7 km Bodetallauf ascends 150 meters, making it suitable for runners with some prior hill experience. The 11.3 km Roßtrappenlauf doubles the challenge with over 280 meters of elevation gain, while the 22.6 km Roßtrappenlauf XXL serves as the extended option for highly trained participants. The event is organized in Thale with the involvement of SV Stahl Thale and the town, and its established numbering indicates a deep connection to local running history, distinguishing it from newer events. Late entries are not permitted on race day, highlighting its nature as a focused mountain race where preparation is key.
