Cyclists depart Warburg-Scherfede at 8 a.m. for the Warburger Diemel-Sauerland-Marathon, a German road-cycling sportive based in Warburg, North Rhine-Westphalia. This is a cycling marathon, not a running one: the longest option covers 204 km on roads, with shorter routes of 40, 73, and 103 km offered for amateur and regular road cyclists. RSV '98 Warburg e.V. puts on the event, designed for riders seeking a lengthy, undulating day in the Sauerland and Diemel region.
The complete marathon route goes from Warburg towards Adorf and Hoppecke, passing the Aabachtalsperre, continuing past the WEPA paper factory, and returning via Canstein, Wirmighausen, and Marsberg. The event has been held for over twenty-four editions; one recent edition saw 190 participants, with approximately 130 cyclists selecting the shorter courses and 60 undertaking the full 204 km marathon. This distribution indicates the day's appeal: it suits both club riders and local enthusiasts, though the long route presents a significant challenge.
