The BALTIC X Cold Water Swim begins next to the Binz pier, with participants entering the Baltic Sea in April instead of a pool or calm lake. This open-water swim offers two distances: 900 meters or 1,900 meters. The regulations emphasize the water's temperature: all swimmers must wear a 4 mm thick, long-sleeved, long-legged wetsuit, which is inspected before the start.
The course runs parallel to the pier, proceeds along the shore to a designated turning buoy, and then directs swimmers back towards the pier. The event highlights the psychological aspect of cold-water swimming, adopting the German concept of overcoming your “inner pig dog” as its slogan. Competitive swimmers have additional motivation to race rather than simply complete the course, as prize money is awarded to the top three male and female finishers in both distances.
