Kadavermarchen begins in Aalborg, Denmark. Runners aim to escape a fictional zombie outbreak before it engulfs the area surrounding the city. It is a 12-hour race offering multiple distance options, but the primary objective is clear: travel at least 60 kilometers in a straight line from Aalborg before the infection zone reaches you. Anyone caught by the outbreak is marked DNF, with the race narrative adding the unofficial consequence of having their brain eaten. The event embraces the concept, presenting itself as an ultramarathon that might necessitate a sprint if the zombies close in.
No set route is provided to all participants. Competitors navigate independently, deciding whether to head north, south, east, or west. Smaller, unexpected outbreaks can compel detours, potentially extending the race duration. SMS alerts from the fictional ReGen Inc. notify runners of new danger zones. Some teams carry a loud, unusual suitcase connected to a potential vaccine, which also draws zombies within the narrative. This scenario demands more than endurance; participants must make strategic decisions, remain aware of their environment, and maintain progress through darkness as the fictional Ground Zero event expands from Aalborg.
