The Burgos Ultra Stage Race, known as The Way of Legends, is a six-day foot race held in Burgos, northern Spain, within the Castile and León region. Participants complete the course in stages, not as a single continuous run. Five primary stages approach marathon distance, concluding with a significantly shorter final stage. The total distance ranges from approximately 174 to 192 km, varying by edition. With minimal asphalt, this event is predominantly a trail stage race, distinct from road ultras.
The course crosses the Burgos province, passing through the Ribera del Duero and Ribera del Arlanza wine regions. It features forest trails, varied terrain, and includes stops in medieval villages. The final stage utilizes a section of the ancient Saint James pilgrimage route, leading into Burgos and concluding at the Burgos Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Gothic site. The race embraces its "Way of Legends" theme, incorporating elements of legends, heroes, Cathars, strongholds, and remote massifs. Runner experiences often mention challenging weather, isolated sections, and the mental focus required to navigate from one marker to the next over multiple days.
