Carrera Popular del Cristo

The Carrera Popular del Cristo is a running race held in La Laguna, Tenerife, within Spain’s Santa Cruz de Tenerife province. Recent listings place it in early September, beginning in the late afternoon. The local sports authority, Organismo Autónomo de Deportes de La Laguna, organizes the event from its offices on Calle Alcalde Alonso Suárez Melián. The race's name references the Santísimo Cristo del Calvario, a polychrome wooden Pietà created by Fernando Estévez. Its religious roots trace back to the seventeenth century with the establishment of a Calvario and Via Crucis. Consequently, the race is integrated with older Tenerife devotional traditions, rather than existing as an isolated road event.
