The Cross Internacional de Atapuerca is a cross-country race held in Atapuerca, in Spain's Burgos region. It takes place in cold and often challenging terrain, distinct from road or track races. The event is managed by the Diputación de Burgos via its provincial sport and youth institute and holds a Gold category status on the World Athletics calendar. Having completed over twenty editions, it serves as a consistent fixture for dedicated cross-country athletes, not merely a singular exhibition.
The race's conditions, including rain, wind, and severe cold, often transform the competition into a test of endurance. The participant list attracts elite distance runners, such as Nadia Battocletti, an Italian athlete who has earned Olympic and world silver medals in the 10,000m and a world bronze in the 5,000m. She is aiming for her initial podium finish at Atapuerca, while Kwizera returns as the current champion. Battocletti also possesses a significant cross-country background, having secured all European cross-country titles from the under-20 to the senior ranks.
