Bruniquel Origine Trail is a February trail-running series held in Bruniquel, located in the Quercy area of Tarn-et-Garonne. This region features cool weather and rugged limestone terrain near the Aveyron Gorges. The event incorporates local prehistory, with race names like Erectus, Neandertal, Habilis, Cro Magnon, and Sapiens. The program includes classic trail races, canitrails, hikes, and long timed formats. The shortest trail is approximately 12 km with 500 m of elevation gain. The Neandertal and Habilis routes offer more challenging climbs, reaching about 25 km with 1,400 m of ascent and around 38-39 km with 2,000 m of ascent, respectively. The timed races challenge solo runners or relay teams to accumulate maximum distance and elevation within 12 or 24 hours, utilizing variable loops of roughly 20 to 25 km, each with 1,000 to 1,400 m of climbing.
The courses wind around Bruniquel, a hilltop village recognized as one of France's most beautiful, overlooking the Vere and Aveyron valleys with the Bruniquel castles above. Expect technical, demanding trails rather than easy paths. One section from the castle to the second aid station, covering 6 to 9 km, is rated difficult. The middle section is longer and more runnable, while the final return to the castle is short but strenuous. The event also caters to walkers, offering hiking options of 13, 22, or 25 km depending on the specific program. The prehistoric theme is significant, as the nearby Bruniquel cave holds the oldest known Neanderthal traces deep underground, and the Pouxets cave was discovered within the village area.
