The Défi des Fondus de l'Ubaye begins and ends in Jausiers, located in France's Ubaye Valley. This event offers participants a single day of mountain cycling challenges, rather than a fixed distance. It is a cycling randonnée following FFCT long-distance routes, with distances ranging from 48 to 270 km and elevation gains from 1,680 to 6,400 metres. Even the shortest route is classified as black, indicating it is intended for riders experienced in serious Alpine climbing, not for casual touring.
The most straightforward option is the out-and-back route from Jausiers to the Cime de la Bonette, covering 48 km with 1,680 metres of elevation gain. Longer options are available at 120, 160, 197, and 232 km, culminating in the full 270 km version, which may involve up to seven ascents within a single day. Participants can select from multiple routes and have the flexibility to alter their plans en route, aligning with the event's "fondus" ethos: ambitious cyclists tackling as much of the Ubaye as their endurance allows. The event also generates funds for Vaincre la mucoviscidose, contributing to the fight against cystic fibrosis.
