Étampes Trolls starts runners after dark from the Parc de la mairie in Étampes-sur-Marne, a village in the Aisne department of Hauts-de-France. Organized by Chierry j’y cours in January, it provides two night trail options: a 20 km Grand Troll and a 10 km Tyo Troll. The race is self-sufficient from start to finish, with no aid stations on the course, so runners must carry a headlamp, water, rain jacket, survival blanket, whistle, and mobile phone. Cold weather is expected, and trail shoes plus proper winter clothing are strongly advised.
The route remains almost entirely on vineyards, dirt paths, wooded trails, and village-side tracks, with the longer distance climbing about 650 m and the shorter one about 280 m. Runners follow marked paths around the heights above Étampes-sur-Marne, moving by torchlight and headlamp, with valley views when the darkness permits. The troll theme is more than a name: costumes are encouraged, and Miss and Mister Troll awards go to the best dressed runners. After the finish, the mood shifts from cold night effort to hot food, with croque-monsieur, mulled wine, soup, a finish-line refreshment stop, and awards for the top five women and men.
