The Grand Prix de la Châtaigne in Lamastre is a semi-nocturnal urban trail through the town center, starting in the evening and requiring every runner to carry a headlamp. Runners choose either 5.3 km or 10.6 km, with 280 meters of climbing; it is short but not flat. The event also appears under the older-sounding name Cross de la Châtaigne. The sports department of Lamastre Town Hall organizes it with support from the local Crédit Agricole branch.
The course is based around central Lamastre and O'Gradins, offering trail runners a compact town race rather than a countryside point-to-point route. It draws fans of urban trail running. Children get their own races, and walkers can join a 5.3 km hike linked to Octobre Rose. The chestnut theme is more than a name: after the racing, the evening finishes with a free giant roasted-chestnut gathering, with pans of chestnuts served after the event.
