L'Hivernal Trail du Crozet begins at the Grande Porte, the ancient entrance to Le Crozet's fortified wall, constructed in 1236. This winter trail-running event takes place in the medieval village of Le Crozet, coordinated by Agence Week&sport alongside the local festival committee and the commune. Participants can select from three distances: an 8 km introduction to winter trail running, a 15 km intermediate option, and a 28 km course named L'Hivernal. The races commence in the morning from the village center, starting with stone streets and local history before the ascent begins.
All three courses briefly traverse Le Crozet before ascending to the heights above the village, offering views over the Roanne plain, from the Morvan toward the Lyonnais hills. The 8 km route features 200 m of elevation gain, split equally between trails and road, with minor inclines and undulating sections. The 15 km route has 400 m of climbing, favoring trails over road, and includes a blend of quicker sections, natural paths, and opportunities to regain pace after terrain changes. The 28 km L'Hivernal accumulates 850 m of climbing, awards 1 ITRA point, and holds a UTMB index of 2. A local element is present in the race names as well: the 15 km option references the traditional mâchon, the substantial Lyonnais-style meal awaiting finishers.
