La Skyrhune is a mountain trail event held in Ascain, French Basque Country, around mid-September on the Rhune Massif. The primary race covers 21 km with approximately 1,630 m of elevation gain. While short on paper, it is steep, technical, and suited for runners skilled on uneven terrain. The event also features a 10 km walk and races for younger participants, with the main trail race attracting over 400 runners in a recent year.
The 21 km course crosses ridges above Ascain, with roughly 80% on narrow single-track paths. Participants will cross streams, navigate rocky areas, and tackle technical ascents before reaching expansive views of the Bay of Txingudi, the Landes coast, and the Basque mountains. La Skyrhune is a stop on the Golden Trail National Series, attracting strong national competitors, and has previously hosted the series' national final. The Rhune's mountain train is a visible element of the landscape, placing the race alongside a well-known local attraction.
