Le Kilomètre Vertical Belmaig is a short, difficult uphill race in Arles-sur-Tech, organized by Skyrunning France. It begins at the Fontaine des Buis and ascends to Belmaig, reaching 1,280 meters. The course covers 1,000 meters of elevation gain within 2.9 km. This is a vertical kilometer in the most direct sense: minimal distance, significant climbing, and no opportunity for a relaxed pace. Participants begin individually, spaced thirty seconds apart, with the initial runner starting in the early afternoon.
The path ascends a steep trail through a chestnut forest before arriving at a summit offering views of Catalonia, the Canigou massif, and the Mediterranean. Following the ascent, runners descend to the original starting point. A refreshment station at 1.8 km serves runners in both directions, with water also available at the summit. Poles are permitted. Organizers recommend bringing a windbreaker and a headlamp, indicative of the mountain environment. The field is limited to approximately one hundred runners, but the leading competitors are swift, with recent victories achieved in under 39 minutes for men and under 49 minutes for women. The event concludes with awards for the top three male and female finishers, category prizes, and a final aperitif.
