In Verdaches, located in France's Vallée du Bès, Le Kilomètre Vertical du Blayeul challenges runners to ascend 1,000 meters over a distance of just 2.9 km. This race is an autumn vertical kilometer, structured as a short, steep, individual time trial rather than a mass start event. Participants depart every 30 seconds, creating a day that feels more like a mountain time trial than a crowded beginning.
The course ascends from forest trails into alpine pastures, culminating at the summit of Blayeul, which stands at 2,189 meters. At the finish, runners receive refreshments and a panoramic view of the Southern Alps. The allowance of walking poles indicates the steepness of the course. Bib pickup is at the Verdaches town hall. Each participant receives a bib, a goodie bag, and souvenir photos, with an optional post-race meal available. Miles Republic organizes this event, now in its ninth edition.
