Montauban’s marathon starts and finishes at Parc du Cours Foucault, in the Tarn-et-Garonne city locals describe as pinker than Toulouse. This March running event offers mild early-spring conditions, featuring a full 42.195 km marathon, a four-person marathon relay, a half marathon, a 10 km race, and children’s events. The race accommodates various skill levels, but the full marathon has a limited field size, giving it a more local, family-oriented atmosphere compared to a large city marathon.
The marathon course is an urban two-loop route within Montauban, and it is not the obvious choice for a personal best because of the hilly terrain of the surrounding Tarn-et-Garonne. Runners begin at Cours Foucault, pass the city landmarks of Ingres and Olympe de Gouges, cross or follow waterways including the Petit Mortarieu, Grand Mortarieu, Tescou, and Tarn, and go by sights such as Hôtel Lefranc de Pompignan, Place Nationale with its red-brick monuments and market, and the Jardin des Plantes. The weekend attracts runners, companions, and visitors from outside Occitanie, with a local tradition being the Boulets de Montauban: roasted hazelnuts coated in dark chocolate, linked to the city’s history of resistance.
