At the Château de Bruniquel in southwest France, NéanderTrail de Bruniquel offers a prehistoric-themed trail weekend in March. The series includes 11 named events, ranging from the 10 km Habilis trail and the matching Rando Silex hike to 24-hour races on a 37 km loop with 2,010 m of climbing. The most demanding solo option, L'Odyssée Néandertal 24h, covers 225 km, while Les clans de Néandertal 24h has teams of three on the same loop. Additional events include 21 km, 29 km, and 37 km trail races, two combined challenges over both days, a 16 km hike, and a children's race named Chasseur-cueilleur.
The course design emphasizes repeated steep trail sections rather than a flat point-to-point run. Long-course participants must carry mandatory equipment, pass three aid stations and one refreshment point, and are timed every 3 km via Live Trail tracking. The race names contribute to the series' character: Homo sapiens is the 37 km race, Erectus is the 29 km race with 1,630 m of climbing, and Cro-Magnon is the 21 km option with 1,080 m of climbing. The team 24-hour race requires strategic planning and teamwork, as three runners must collectively manage the time, the loop, and the elevation.
