Runners use spikes to tackle groomed ski slopes at the Trail de Noël - Les Saisies, a snow-trail race in the Les Saisies winter resort in Savoie, France. It takes place in early December, just before Christmas, in the Beaufortain mountains. The event has two distances: 10 km with 350 meters of elevation gain, and 20 km with approximately 790 meters of gain, making even the shorter distance a true mountain run.
The course follows pistes normally used for downhill skiing, featuring packed snow, potential ice, and steep climbs. Snowshoes are prohibited on ascents, requiring spiked shoes and good balance. The route includes the Bisanne climb, offering a broad panorama of the surrounding mountains and Mont Blanc. The race embraces a Christmas theme with Santa outfits, elves, and other costumes, and has been a fixture on the Savoyard trail calendar for over ten years.
