Trail de Vulcain is a late-winter trail running event held in Volvic, located in the Puy-de-Dôme department of France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The races traverse the Parc Naturel des Volcans d’Auvergne, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape formed by the ancient volcanoes of the Massif Central. The event offers a variety of distances, from short trail runs to an ultra-marathon: 13 km, 22 km, 48 km, and 77 km are available, alongside a children’s race and a hiking option.
The Ultra Volcanique, the longest race, spans 77 km with approximately 2,900 meters of elevation gain, designed for runners seeking a challenging mountain experience over a flat course. The Volvic Nature route provides a shorter 13 km option with 540 meters of gain for less experienced trail runners, while the Riom Limagne & Volcans race is 22 km with 880 meters of gain. This event has been held for over twenty years, and its operational details reflect a commitment to reducing waste: participants must bring their own cups to aid stations, and bibs are not provided with safety pins.
