Trail des Cabornis begins in Chasselay, a village in the Monts d'Or located roughly 30 minutes from Lyon. This early-season trail race, held in March, has a cool and occasionally damp atmosphere suited to its challenging, entirely natural terrain. The event has taken place annually since 2003, offering three primary distances: 13 km, 25 km, and a long course of approximately 41 km featuring 1,800 meters of elevation gain.
The courses traverse the paths and slopes of the Monts d'Or, providing genuine trail running rather than a quick road-style race. The shorter option serves as an accessible introduction for less experienced trail runners, while the longest distance requires stamina and proficiency on difficult terrain. The organizers also conduct a complimentary course preview each year, sometimes including gear demonstrations from brands like La Sportiva and BV Sport. A recent addition, the MiniGône event, introduces younger participants to engaging nature trails, and the race weekend relies on volunteers assisting on Saturday, Sunday, or both days.
