Trail des Citadelles is a series of mountain trail races held in Lavelanet, Ariège, Occitanie, within the Cathar Pyrenees and Pays d’Olmes. Taking place in early April, the events offer distances from a challenging 10 km to ultra-distances of approximately 70 to 74 km. The shortest race involves a 500 m ascent, while the longer routes ascend around 2,000 m to over 3,000 m, marking it as a demanding trail day for participants prepared for significant elevation changes.
The routes create a large circuit around Lavelanet, a town situated on both sides of the Touyre mountain stream. Organizers characterize the terrain as diverse and strenuous, advising runners to be in peak physical condition. Popular demand leads to staggered registration phases to prevent server overload, with consistent pricing regardless of sign-up timing. Aid stations are cup-free, requiring participants to bring their own, and live and past results, along with race videos and photo galleries from the Photographes Occitans collective, are available online.
