The Diagonale des Fous is the main event of the Grand Raid de La Reunion, a multi-day ultra-trail crossing the island from Saint-Pierre to Stade de la Redoute in Saint-Denis. This primary race covers 164 km with 9,900 meters of elevation gain. The race week also features the Trail de Bourbon (95 km) and the Mascareignes (67 km). It demands significant commitment, with a 65-hour time limit and a requirement for prior serious mountain race experience.
The course ascends from coastal sugarcane fields through the early kilometers towards Piton Textor at 2,200 meters. It then passes through Cilaos and Mafate before descending towards Saint-Denis. The original start in Saint-Philippe and the initial climb towards Piton de la Fournaise were once part of the race's tradition, but the volcano ascent was later removed due to permission issues. Participants arrive from over 30 nations, and the elite field draws renowned ultra-runners like Kilian Jornet, Iker Karrera, Antoine Guillon, and Tsuyoshi Kaburaki. The race has a challenging history, with abandonment rates nearing 50% and past fatalities prompting organizers to implement stricter entry criteria.
