Starburster begins at sunset in Hurn Forest, with runners departing from Hospital Services Cricket Club for a twilight trail race. Participants can choose between 5 mile and 10 mile routes, both following an out-and-back course on the main forest trail. The event is designed for running as daylight fades, requiring every runner to have a head torch or chest torch; additional lights are suggested.
The course remains on hardstanding, well-maintained track, making trail shoes recommended but not required. The cricket club offers toilets, bag storage, race-number collection, and the start/finish aid station, which provides drinks and both sweet and savoury food. Runners must bring their own cups. Entry also supports the forest, with 20% of the fee allocated to Forestry England for maintaining forests and trails. The 5 mile race is open to individuals aged 16 and over, while the 10 mile race is open to those aged 17 and over.
