The Cumbria Way Ultra runs point-to-point from Ulverston to Carlisle, passing through the Lakes. It begins with about 60 runners heading out before dawn. The course leads you past Beacon Tarn, Coniston, Tarn Hows, and the Langdales, with navigation challenges in the early stages.
This is trail running with real consequences: route notes in one hand, GPS in the other, checkpoints that matter, and small mercies like "A couple of slices of water melon and a flapjack" before moving on. Expect local highland cattle too, and the sensible instinct that you "didn’t fancy arguing with those horns". Most take on the full route, but there are relay options as a pair or a team of 5, and trackers can plot your location for people following along.
