The Drop Manchester begins with participants surrendering phones, watches, maps, and navigation tools before boarding a bus while blindfolded. They are then transported and left at an undisclosed location outside Manchester, without a set route, markers, GPS, or any indication of direction. The event is offered in 6, 10, and 15-mile formats, with these distances representing a straight line from the event centre. The actual distance covered on foot will vary based on individual navigation.
The course is determined by each participant's navigation through Greater Manchester, incorporating urban streets, trails, and navigational errors into a self-directed return to the finish. The 15-mile option is the original and most demanding, while the 10-mile event follows the same principles over a reduced distance. The Drop 6 is exclusively for those unfamiliar with the area, as local knowledge would diminish the intended uncertainty. All participants receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag, requiring them to depend on their judgment, memory, road awareness, and route selection to reach the finish.
