The Southern Upland Way forms the backbone of this challenging point-to-point race, traversing what organizers dub "Scotland's greatest trail." The Ultra Scotland 50 route traces the Southern Upland Way from St. John's Town of Dalry, passing a historic trail near Tibbie Shiels by St Mary's Loch, and continuing through forests and valleys beneath the imposing mountains of Southern Scotland. It offers a true ultra experience: exposed sections requiring caution, and a rich history to engage the mind when fatigue sets in.
The course features marked trails, not constant guidance, with extended runnable stretches interspersed with cumulative climbs and varied terrain demanding perseverance. The participants are experienced ultra runners, fostering a focused and pragmatic atmosphere as they manage cutoffs, equipment, nutrition, and the upcoming sections. GB Ultras provides live online tracking, and finishers receive Gold, Silver, or Bronze medals based on their placement, adding a competitive element to the conclusion of a long day on Scotland's Great Trails.
