In Burgenland, near the Hungarian border, the third Harmadik kékfrankos maraton is more a "running experience flavored with fine wines and gastronomic specialties" than a stopwatch duel. It takes its cue from the French Marathon du Médoc, so the spirit is clear: bring legs, bring appetite, and leave the grim race-face at home.
The route winds through vineyards, with stops for runners and walkers to sample local gastronomic specialties and Blaufränkisch, or Kékfrankos, wines. This is the one they cheekily call the “longest marathon in the world,” because the focus is on eating, drinking, and feasting, “not about 3-minute kilometers” and “not about sweaty finishes.” More participants wear unique costumes, with prizes for the most original and creative ones, indicating a crowd that wants to move, laugh, and make a proper day of it.
