Rákóczi Castle provides Zemplén Ultra a historic stone entrance to the hills, with the race proceeding into the wild, rugged Zemplén Mountains from this point. This is trail ultra running in a direct mountain style: wooded paths, castles, and sufficient climbing to make the effort feel worthwhile.
Expect dirt underfoot, extended wooded sections, and a course shaped by 4,000 m of ascent rather than by a simple rhythm. The event is for ultra runners, so the atmosphere should be more headlamp-and-hydration-pack than casual jog, with the most rewarding parts found in those "wooded paths, castles" sections where the terrain itself is the main feature.
