The Monterosa Est Himalayan Trail begins in darkness from Macugnaga, runners activating headlamps as the Anzasca Valley remains quiet. This trail-running event takes place in northern Piedmont, Italy, situated at the base of Monte Rosa’s eastern face, offering four race distances in August.
Macugnaga is a Walser village located at 1,327 meters, directly beneath a formidable wall of ice and rock on Monte Rosa, which reaches 4,634 meters. Alpinists liken this eastern face to the great Himalayan walls, and numerous climbers globally have established routes there; the race allows participants to traverse this same high-mountain environment from the valley floor, distinct from a climbing ascent.
