The Trail della Ficuzza begins at the Casina Reale di Caccia in Ficuzza, close to Palermo in Sicily, directing runners into the Bosco della Ficuzza Nature Reserve. This mountain and forest trail race, held in mid-December, features a primary course of approximately 22.6 km with around 910 m of elevation gain. ASD Ecotrail Sicilia organizes the event, which contributes to the UTMB Index. Competitive participation requires FIDAL, RUNCARD, or RUNCARD EPS membership; a non-competitive option is available for others.
The route incorporates wild forest trails, natural paths, some paved segments, and sections of a former railway line. Participants will traverse Mediterranean woodland, with holm oaks and cork trees, with vistas towards the Rocca Busambra limestone formation. A shorter, non-competitive trail of about 14 km and 500 m of climbing is also provided. This attracts both dedicated trail runners and individuals seeking a demanding yet less formal run within the reserve. Appropriate footwear is essential, as even the shorter courses involve significant ascents exceeding 300 m.
