The DEEP JAPAN ULTRA 100 in Niigata is a trail ultramarathon series held around Uonuma, Nagaoka, Sanjo, and Kamo. The primary DEEP JAPAN 160km event covers 173.30 km with 8,410 meters of elevation gain and loss, classifying it as a demanding mountain race, not a flat road ultra. The series also offers the UONUMA 80km and SUMON 30km for participants seeking shorter distances within the same event. All races are for individuals 20 years or older and include course cutoffs. The 80km has a 24-hour limit, the 30km a 10-hour limit, and the main race has multi-day limits and 11 aid stations.
The course is situated in Niigata's snow country, specifically in areas like Irihirose, known for snow depths reaching approximately 4 meters in populated zones. Runners navigate through extensive beech forests and mountain landscapes sculpted by heavy snowfall, a defining characteristic of the race. The starting point is accessible from Tokyo Station via the Joetsu Shinkansen and Tadami Line, with the journey concluding near the unmanned Oshirakawa Station. TRAIL RUNNERS is the organizer, and the long race holds ITRA Mountain Level 7 and Finisher Level 330 ratings, indicating its suitability for experienced mountain ultrarunners.
